Pacquiao and the weights

By Daniel Echevarria: Back in the day whether or not it was in your very own neighborhood or anticipating the stroke of 3:00 P.M. on that huge black and white school clock everyone has always been excited for a fight. If it was in your neighborhood it was usually amongst friends and by the end you would be playing again or if it was a rival from another street or town in which rules simply did not matter what ever advantage you had all bets were off and you were taking it.

Now in a school environment you always had the school bully the guy who seemed to be liked by the majority and hated by the weak and dismissed by the few who could see past the bravado and knew and understood the truth of his wonderful illusion of power played and well orchestrated on the majority. This high school bully preyed on anyone who he felt he could over power and he would look for any size advantage possible to OVERPOWER his victim and any opponent who would be “easy” and would make him shine and all he would have to do at the end was flash that million dollar smile and all was well in the land. Now after I painted that picture for you let’s get real what in the world is TOP RANK and Manny Pacquiao trying to pull by creating Pacquiao as this unstoppable force in the ring but the whole time he is being used as a real life High School Bully by using “catch weights” to get the immediate weight advantage over some of his opponents before they even step foot in the ring. Can boxing fans really label his recent achievements as OMG G.O.A.T. performances when he makes his opponents drop down in weight or come up higher which makes them lose there abilities in so many ways think about it. Or is it when it comes to a possible dangerous opponent like Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito or most recent Juan Manuel Marquez again. Think about it. Today what has really made me put a spot light on Pacquiao is the fact that according to the ratings via The Ring.com, number one Sergio Martinez, a middleweight which has a limit of 160lbs in his weight class, was asked about a fight with Pacquiao last year. Pacquiao was going to agree if Martinez dropped to 150lbs and when he said ‘ok, will do, then Pacquiao changed it and said ”No 147lbs,” so that’s a 13 pound drop for Martinez but nothing for Pacquiao. Number 2, recently Cotto turned down a fight with the supposed G.O.A.T. Mean Machine from the Philippines’ Pacquiao who we all would think would be like hitting the lotto if you get that call but Cotto who is a Junior Middleweight which has a limit of 154pds was told he must drop to 147pd which is just 2 pds more than his weight drop in his first fight with Pacquiao which was 145pd so just to seal the deal of this fight drop to 147 but for some strange reason readers Cotto said “NO” but why NO think about it? Number 3, Juan Marquez a “lightweight” with a limit for his division at 135lbs, was forced to pack on weight 9lbs extra to a catch weight of 144lbs to fight Pacquiao recently in which as many saw actually made him (Marquez) more impressive. Now Number 4 & 5 that are left on the table now is Tim Bradley and Lamont Peterson, two “Jr. welterweights” that’s right key word is junior which means they are smaller than welterweights which means smaller than Pacquiao’s weight class and their weight limit for that weight class is 140lbs. So Pacquiao the best fighter of our era is the Number one “welterweight” according to ring.com and below him in his own weight class he has in exact order Mayweather, Ortiz, Berto, Senchenko, Brook, and Mike Jones but he (Pacquiao) is going after little guys in the Junior welter weight division to keep a name for himself like a High School Bully beating on the little guys and if this is the case how can we as fans pay $55.00 to $60.00 on PPV and show respect for him as a true peoples champ because it seems to me he is more focused on getting “The True Peoples Checks” for that PPV money instead of fighting the best and dangerous or anyone who can derail his spotlight think about it folks be true “Boxing fans” not “Fighter Fans”.
