Image: Nonito Donaire vs. Victor Terrazas on July 14th at the Cowboys StadiumBy Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (28-1, 18 KO’s) will be making his first defense of his title against 29-year-old #2 World Boxing Council ranked contender Victor Terrazas (32-2-1, 18 KO’s) on July 14th at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, according to the Manila Bulletin.

If you’re a fan of boxing and were hoping to see a better opponent for Donaire, this is really bad news because Terrazas is big step down from Donaire’s last opponent Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., who Donaire defeated by a 12 round split decision earlier this month. I wasn’t even impressed with Vazquez Jr. as an opponent given that he had been recently knocked out going into the fight with Donaire. Boxing fans don’t want to see Donaire face guys Terrazas and Vazquez Jr. They want to see Donaire fight WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, but it doesn’t look like Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum is interested in making that right now.

Former four-time world champion Jorge Arce had been mentioned as the guy that Donaire would be fighting next. However, Arce will be put on the undercard of the June 9th fight between Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley card in a move likely made to get American boxing fans excited about seeing Arce vs. Donaire later in the year.

Terrazas, #2 WBC, recently defeated Donaire victim Fernando Montiel by a 12 round unanimous decision last November to capture the vacant WBC Silver super bantamweight title. Terrazas knocked Montiel down with a right hand in the 5th and punished him with body and head shots throughout the fight. Terrazas seems to punch really well to the body and has decent power when throw left hooks and right hands to the head. However, he’s not busy enough to the extreme and would get outworked by Donaire. He’s about the same height as Donaire at 5’7″, but gives up his height by crouching forward. He likes to hit and then move back immediately, so we could see a rather boring fight between him and Donaire because doesn’t like to Terrazas mix it up for prolonged exchanges unlike a lot of the basic fighters that Donaire has been put in with.

Terrazas is more of a technician. But if Donaire is unable to get this guy out of there, he’s going to take a lot of punishment due to the heavy hands and powerful jab from Terrazas. I can see Donaire winning but having a swollen face. I’m surprised Arum is letting Donaire fight this guy because he wont impress fighting Terrazas. This is too sold and is a natural super bantamweight, not one of the tiny guys like the ones Donaire has been mainly fighting his entire career. Donaire’s face and eyes could end up badly bruised by Terrazas. That’s what I see happening and by putting the fight in the Cowboys’ Stadium, Arum will likely have more Terrazas fans at the fight than Donaire fans. Terrazas fights well when being cheered and he could give Donaire a real beating and might even win.
