Image: Macklin faces Sergio Martinez next, but is still blubbering about his loss to SturmBy Scott Gilfoid: You’d think that Matthew Macklin (28-3, 19 KO’s) with his upcoming fight against the incredibly dangerous Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KO’s) would be worrying about that fight and that fight only, but Macklin is still moaning about his loss to WBA World middleweight champion Felix Sturm from last June.

For some reason, Macklin just get let it go and come to terms with the fact that he got beat.

Those things happen, and what can you say? Macklin got his shot at a title, fought well for the first four rounds, but then completely ran out of gas in the last eight rounds of the fight. I’ve never seen a fighter fade as badly as Macklin did. He went from fighting well to fighting like utter trash from the 5th round on.

Macklin told the herald.ie “Everyone in America saw that [saw Macklin lose to Sturm] and they were more outraged than we were in England or Ireland…Most people in American barely had Sturm even winning three rounds. Everyone thought I won it, but over here they felt I really dominated him.”

Damn, Macklin; wipe away your tears and stand up already. Buck up, man! It’s going to be okay.

Of course, they thought Macklin dominated Sturm in the UK. What do you expect? Those guys are from the UK, and they’re naturally going to side with Macklin. But the guy lost and he’s hallucinating if he thinks that the Sturm-Macklin fight was seen by a lot of Americans. It wasn’t televised on cable in the U.S as far as I know.

The hardcore American boxing fans saw the fight, and ton of them saw what I saw – Macklin fighting well initially and then running out of gas and losing 8 rounds to 4. I give Macklin a lot of credit for fighting well for four rounds, but after that he was red in the face, exhausted and throwing nothing but arm punches for the remainder of the fight.

Sturm was lighting him up with hard jabs and combinations, and strangely enough, Sturm was the harder puncher in that fight. I never thought Sturm was much of a puncher and I still don’t. But he does look like a bigger puncher than Macklin. I think Macklin needs to come to terms with his loss, and own it. That was his baby and he’s got to accept it. Had he not faded so badly, he would have won it, but he fought like it was a four round bout instead of a 12 rounder.

Macklin will lose by knockout to Martinez on March 17th at the Madison Square Garden, and this should put Macklin’s mind to rest because there won’t be any doubt whatsoever about who won the fight. I just hope Macklin doesn’t go back to the UK and have the Brits and the Irish blowing smoke up his backside telling him he should have won despite the fact that he was carried out of the ring. That’s the bad thing about listening to back slappers.

They’ll tell you want you want to hear instead of the truth, because they’re trying to be kind and in get in good with you. Macklin needs people around him that can tell him the straight honest truth about his performance. I’ll tell him right off about what he did right and what he did wrong. How can Macklin ever improve if people are slathering on the compliments instead of giving him the straight dope?
