Image: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Andy Lee possible for June 2ndBy Dan Ambrose: According to Steve Kim at maxboxing.com, WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31 KO’s) could be defending his title against #6 WBC ranked contender Andy Lee (27-1, 19 KO’s) on June 2nd in Texas. Chavez Jr. just fought last Saturday night beating Marco Antonio Rubio in Texas at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

TWhat really tainted the fight, however, was the Texas State Athletic Commission, who for some reason forgot to book a drug lab to test the fighters for performance enhancing drugs.

Kim said this on his twitter “The plan is for JC Chavez Jr to return on HBO on June 2nd vs. Andy Lee, back in Texas (hopefully they won’t ‘forget’ testing).”

This is very strange because Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum has already mentioned wanting to match Chavez Jr. with one of his house fighters Antonio Margarito next, and usually when there’s a choice between a Top Rank fighter and a non-Top Rank guy, Arum will opt for the Top Rank fighters to be matched against his other Top Rank guy for an in house fight.

The only way it makes sense that Chavez Jr. is being pitted against the very dangerous Lee is if the WBC has told Arum that they won’t sanction a fight between Chavez Jr. and Margarito due to Margarito being a junior middleweight, not a middleweight.

Margarito hasn’t won a fight in two years and hasn’t won a quality fight in four rounds. He beat Miguel Cotto in 2008, and then two years later Margarito got his last win over Roberto Garcia. It’s now been another two years and Margarito still hasn’t won another fight. That kind of tells you that he doesn’t deserve a fight against Chavez Jr.

If Chavez Jr. and Lee do end up fighting in Texas, you have to wonder whether if the Texas commission will bother testing the fighters. I would be skeptical if I was Lee about this. The last thing he needs is for no testing being involved, even though the only testing we’re talking about here is a simple urinalysis.

That test is considered outdated in the minds of a lot of boxing fans, as the blood testing seems to be able to catch a lot of the newer performance enhancing drugs that are being used by fighters to get an edge.
