Donaire’s performance against Vazquez Jr. proves he won’t be the next Pacquiao

By Chris Williams: I think we just saw the upper ceiling to Nonito Donaire’s ability to move up in weight and still dominate in his performance last night against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

While some of Donaire’s fans have painted a picture of the Filipino Donaire as being the next Manny Pacquiao with his ability to go from one weight class to another and still dominate, it looks like Donaire won’t be able to find success once he moves up another level to featherweight.

Donaire’s power at super bantamweight was underwhelming from the very start and I don’t buy the excuses made about him injuring his left or right hands. The fact is Donaire wasn’t hurting Vazquez Jr. even before he supposedly hurt his hand.

The power just isn’t there. At this point, I don’t think Donaire could even beat all of the super bantamweights and they’re talking about Donaire moving up to featherweight to fight Juan Manuel Lopez or Yuriorkis Gamboa? Donaire wouldn’t stand a chance against either of those guys and nor would he against Orlando Salido.

Donaire’s power is excellent from the flyweight to the super flyweight divisions, but he couldn’t do anything against Omar Narvaez, a tiny super flyweight and he couldn’t do anything against Vazquez Jr. at super bantamweight.

The only thing Donaire does now is run around trying to showboat and that’s really dull. Without his power in the last two fights, Donaire is just another fighter who likes to make excuses for why he’s knocking anyone out anymore. Donaire blamed Narvaez for not being able to knock him out, and now Donaire is blaming his injured hand.

I just wonder how much longer Donaire can keep up with the excuses. He’ll probably have some new excuse next time he fights against Jorge Arce, and his fight after that against Toshiaki Nishioka. Donaire already has excuses for why he won’t fight Guillermo Rigondeaux, seeing him as someone not worthy to fight.

At featherweight, Donaire will likely lose to Salido, Lopez, Chris John, Celestino Caballero, Johnny Gonzalez, Hozumi Hasegwa, and Mikey Garcia. I especially think Salido, Lopez and Garcia would do a number on Donaire. Gamboa would be way too strong and fast for Donaire and I don’t think HBO would want to see that fight put together because Donaire would be exposed.
