By Jim Dower: 22-year-old light welterweight contender Pablo Cesar Cano (23-1-1, 18 KO’s) dropped down a division to defeat Francisco Contreras (16-2, 13 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO on Friday night to capture the World Boxing Council (WBC) FECARBOX lightweight title at the Grand Oasis Resort, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Cano knocked Contreras down three times in the fight, once in the 1st and two more times in the 5th before the fight was halted. Cano looked a lot better at this weight compared to in his last fight in September, losing by a 10th round stoppage to boxing legend Erik Morales in a fight for the vacant WBC light welterweight title.

23-year-old flyweight Mario Rodriguez (13-6-4, 9 KO’s) stopped 34-year-old former WBC light flyweight champion Gilberto Keb Baas (35-22-4, 22 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO to capture the vacant WBC USNBC flyweight title. Baas lost his World Boxing Council strap in his last fight to Adrian Hernandez in April of 2011.

Super middleweight contender Fernando Guerrero (23-1, 18 KO’s) destroyed journeyman Jason Naugler (18-16-1, 11 KO’s) by a 4th round TKO. Guerrero had too much power for Naugler and blasted him out with some monstrous shots of the one-sided fight. The referee halted the fight at 2:36 of the round. For the 25-year-old Guerrero, this is his second consecutive win after being stopped shockingly by 40-year-old Grady Brewer last June.
