Brook wants Khan, but doesn’t feel he’s ready for Mayweather yet

Image: Brook wants Khan, but doesn't feel he's ready for Mayweather yety William Mackay: Unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (26-0, 18 KO’s) would like to knock off former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan after Brook gets finished taking care of 30-year-old former EBU welterweight champion Matthew Hatton next month on March 17th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK.

Brook, 25, said to Boxing News “I’m ready for that fight [Khan] this year. I could take on Amir Khan any time and I’d beat him…When I hit him hard and consistently, Khan is going down. I know I’ve got his number…I’d love to fight Mayweather one day, but he’s the best in the world by a long way and there’s no doubt he’d beat Pacquiao.”

Brook probably would beat Khan by knockout because Khan’s shoving and pulling down on the head tricks wouldn’t work against Brook, because he, unlike Lamont Peterson, knows how to throw an uppercut, and would take Khan’s head off each time he tried to grab him by the back of the head to pull him forward the way that Khan likes to do. Brook would take Khan apart no problem if he could land a fight with him. However, Khan has shown zero interest in fighting Brook in that past, and I can’t see that changing even if Brook were to capture one of the welterweight titles. I see Khan avoiding him and going after guys like WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko instead.

Mayweather, of course, would make easy work of Brook. Mayweather would be too quick for Brook and would pick him apart. Brook has got decent power but he lacks hand speed and he opens himself too much when he’s trying to slug. Mayweather would have countless opportunities to counter Brook resulting in an ugly mismatch. Besides this being a one-sided fight, it would be a bout that wouldn’t interest the boxing public because Brook has been hidden away for the past seven years in the UK fighting 3rd tier opposition. He just recently moved to 2nd tier quality fighters but he needs to step it up already because Hatton is 2nd tier all the way and not someone that will get Brook attention in the U.S. In other words, it’s another wasted fight for Brook.
