The 27-year-old Lee’s trainer Emanuel Steward spoke to Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, and he seems very interested in that fight for Chavez Jr. next. One thing that could get in the way of the fight is if Chavez Jr. gets stripped of his title by the World Boxing Council for failing to defend his title against his mandatory challenger Sergio Martinez.

The WBC said that Chavez Jr. has to fight Martinez next but it looks like Arum isn’t paying attention to any of that and is looking to go ahead and put Chavez Jr. in with whoever he wants to match him against. Presumably, the WBC would have to approve the Chavez Jr. vs. Lee fight, as well as the fact that Chavez Jr. would be bypassing his mandatory challenger once again.

Martinez was said not to have received a step aside payment for Chavez Jr. going around him to fight Marco Antonio Rubio earlier this month. It will be interesting to see if Martinez will get bypassed again and if he does, whether he gets a step aside payment from Top Rank.

Lee has picked up some solid wins in his last three fights, beating Craig McEwan, Alex Bunema and Brian Vera.

Chavez Jr. recently defended his WBC title for the second time in beating Marco Antonio Rubio by a 12 round decision and looked huge compared to Rubio. Chavez Jr. won the fight by using his size on the inside to pound the smaller Rubio to the body and head.

Martinez wants his shot at trying to recapture his WBC title, but he can’t do much unless the WBC decides to enforce their own rules.
