Image: Why Mayweather v Pacquiao must happen in 2012By David Coleman: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard boxing’s latest news. Unbeaten Floyd “Money” Mayweather has officially called Manny Pacquiao out. Whether or not the fight will happen, nobody knows yet but one thing is for sure, it’s a fight the whole world wants to see. Here’s just some of many reasons why this fight is an absolute must for 2012.

The argument over who is officially the world’s best “pound for pound” fighter has been rumbling on for years, even in the most well informed boxing circles. If a fight between these two did happen, the winner would most definitely be recognized universally as the best in the world, and arguably of all time.

Fight fans are sick of seeing Mayweather and Pacquiao in fights against boxers who are way below their level eg. Mosely, Ortiz, Margarito just to name a few. This fight would give boxing fans an old fashioned fight which sees the best fighting the best.

The drug testing fiasco has done nothing but harm to the sport of boxing. Mayweather’s allegations were followed by Pacquiao filing a lawsuit, which did nothing to help the sports already tarnished reputation.

Fight fans are slowly losing patience with boxing. Allegations of foul play in Amir Khan’s recent fight with Lamont Peterson as well as hot prospects like Kell Brook being matched softly against the likes of Galarza, N’dou etc, mean people are losing interest in the sport. This is a worrying trend especially with the recent rise of UFC’s popularity.

Both men are reaching the later stages of their careers, the fight must happen in 2012 before both are passed their peaks.
The two fighters have cleaned up in each of their respective divisions up until now, so this is the only “Mega- Fight” left for them.

This could potentially be the highest grossing fight of all time. Each of them would make an absolute killing just for stepping into the ring.

The arguments will rumble on and many people will have their own views as to why the “biggest fight of all time” hasn’t happened yet, but one thing is for sure, the reputation of the sport rests firmly in these men’s hands. Its all or nothing in 2012…
