Who will Cotto fight if he doesn’t get Pacquiao, Mayweather, Alvarez or Chavez Jr. next?

Image: Who will Cotto fight if he doesn't get Pacquiao, Mayweather, Alvarez or Chavez Jr. next?By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto’s contract with Top Rank ended officially on December 31st, but he’s still working with them on a fight by fight basis but now wants only the cream of the crop big money fights. Cotto has caviar tastes in his next opponent and only wants the big names.

For his next fight, Cotto says he wants one of the following fighters: Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Saul Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Cotto doesn’t seem interested in taking on any of the top contenders and hopefully the WBA can find a champion that is willing to defend the belt against the up and comers so the fighters that have worked their way up the ranks don’t get frozen out while Cotto picks and chooses his money fights.

Let’s say that Cotto doesn’t get any of those guys next. Who does his Bob Arum put him in with? Would Cotto just not fight anyone or would he choose one of the old lions again, or one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters to battle for an easy payday?

Well, let’s start off by listing the guys Cotto won’t likely fight ever:

Austin Trout – too dangerous

Paul Williams – throws too many punches, too big and too dangerous

Erislandy Lara – he knows how to box and has good power. In other words, too dangerous

Vanes Martirosyan – too dangerous

James Kirkland – Are you kidding? Cotto would never fight this guy. Too dangerous

Alfredo Angulo – he hits too hard and would be like a younger version of Antonio Margarito.

Sergiy Dzinziruk – he would box circles around Cotto and make him look like an amateur

Delvin Rodriguez – he’s been looking too good as late, so he’s probably out.

Okay, so now that I’ve got the list of guys that won’t get a Cotto fight, I’m going to list the ones that may get the call if Cotto doesn’t get his wish to fight Chavez Jr., Pacquiao, Mayweather or Alvarez.

Antonio Margarito – a third fight between them would make good money so this has got to be high on the list for Cotto.

Carlos Molina – not much power. It would be a stay busy fight for Cotto.

Shane Mosley – yeah, I know he’s ancient and hasn’t won a fight in eons, but this would satisfy Cotto’s desire to get a name fighter and a good payday.

Victor Ortiz – a dangerous fight for Cotto but a desirable one if nothing else is available
