Image: Schaefer: Mayweather WON'T be fighting Robert GuerreroBy Chris Williams: According to Dan Rafael, former two time world champion Robert Guerrero won’t be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. Rafael says that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said that Guerrero isn’t in the picture for Mayweather’s next fight on May 5th. Schaefer, however, didn’t say who is in the picture for Mayweather.

Here’s what Rafael had to say on this Mayweather news on his twitter: “Spoke to Richard Schaefer about Ortiz. I jokingly asked if he’s working on Floyd-Guerrero deal. He said Mayweather WON’T be facing Guerrero.”

Rafael sees it down to these fighters: Saul Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. I think it’s probably going to be the 21-year-old Alvarez, because that’s by the far the easiest fight to get made of the bunch. Alvarez fights for Golden Boy Promotions and there won’t be any of back and forth game playing that gets in the way of making fights between Top Rank and Golden Boy fighters.

Besides, I really have doubts about Arum having his heart into making a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. I think deep down Arum doesn’t want that fight because of the risk involved and what he stands to lose if Pacquiao gets whipped especially badly. I think if Arum had doubts about it in the past, they were likely strengthened further after seeing how badly Pacquiao struggled with Mayweather victim Juan Manuel Marquez last November. Pacquiao won a gift decision over a guy that Mayweather defeated by a lopsided decision two years ago. Mayweather beat a younger and better version of Marquez than the one Pacquiao faced.

This is good news, though, that Guerrero is out of the picture because few boxing fans wanted to see that fight and it would have been difficult for Mayweather to attract huge numbers against a guy that’s never fought at welterweight before and is coming off of a serious rotator cuff injury. Guerrero needs time to recover from that injury and he needs to move up in weight and prove himself before being picked out for one of Mayweather’s fights.

Alvarez could be the guy that gets the fight. He may not be much more ready or the fight than Guerrero, but he is stronger and has the power to give Mayweather trouble. He’s also someone who fights with a calm head an won’t likely go mental on Mayweather if he starts getting dominated the way that Ortiz imploded in his fight with Floyd last September.
