Image: Mayweather vs. Cotto would be a good fight for May 5thBy Dan Ambrose: With it looking more and more unlikely that a fight can be put together between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao for May 5th, Mayeather is now looking at finding another opponent for that date.

Robert Guerrero has already been ruled out by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer for May 5th, leaving only WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez and possibly Miguel Cotto as the remaining options. While I wouldn’t mind seeing Mayweather fight Alvarez, I think Cotto is a much better alternative for Mayweather because of his ability to draw fans for pay per view.

The one thing that could get in the way of this fight is that Cotto could get picked by his promoter Bob Arum to fight Manny Pacquiao in June. Cotto is one of the four fighters that Arum is choosing from for Manny and Arum is likely to pick Cotto or Juan Manuel Marquez rather than the low money fighters Timothy Bradley and Lamont Peterson. Cotto had a shot against Pacquiao three years ago and as soundly beaten by a 12th round TKO.

Honestly, there’s little reason to make a Cotto-Pacquiao rematch other than the fact that it’s a fight that would make a lot of money and I guess it would still be considered an in house fight for Arum, even though Cotto’s contract with Top Rank expired last December.

Cotto is still fighting for Arum on a fight by fight basis. He could picked for Pacquiao but if not, then that’s where Mayweather would have a chance to land Cotto if the Puerto Rican fighter is interested in that fight. He just had a fight with Antonio Margarito last month, so it’s hard to say if Cotto might have some issues about getting back in the ring after only five months of rest.
