Image: Marquez and Peterson may fight easy tune-ups before they meet in JulyBy Chris Williams: According to RingTV, IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and Juan Manuel Marquez could both take an easy tune-up fight before meeting up in July in a bout that will be held in the Cowboy’s Stadium in Arlington, Texas as part of Arum’s four-fighter tourney.

Arum told RingTV “If we do their [Marquez-Peterson] fight in July, then Marquez is going to look at fighting an easy fight in Mexico. And then, maybe we’ll talk Lamont about fighting an easy, non-title fight also.”

Isn’t it interesting how Arum taken away Golden Boy Promotion’s option of a rematch between Amir Khan and Peterson? That’s got to hurt Golden Boy and Khan big time. It’s like Arum has moved a chess piece on the board to outmaneuver Golden Boy by taking Peterson away from Khan so that he can’t avenge his loss to Peterson from last December.

I don’t know that I’m all that interested in seeing Marquez take another tune-up fight. Marquez took a tune-up last July with his useless 1st round TKO win over Likar Ramos, and now he’s going to take another one. I think what Arum means by tune-up is that Marquez is going to squeeze a safe easy payday in between the Peterson fight.

That’s cool with me. I won’t pay to see any of Marquez’s mismatches if Arum sticks it on one of his cards. Forget that. I like the Peterson-Marquez fight but I don’t want to see these guys face soft opposition to get tune-up [read: easy paydays] fights. They’re both at the point where tune-ups are completely unneeded. I’ve seen too many Top Rank fight cards in the past filled with mismatches, and I’m not going to pay to see Peterson and Marquez face fodder opposition. I don’t care if they put a good main event with it, if the card is filled with mismatches then I don’t want to see it.
