Image: Maloney: David Price will surpass Lennox Lewis in career earningsBy Scott Gilfoid: At this point in his career unbeaten heavyweight prospect David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) has accomplished diddly squat, yet Price’s manager Frank Maloney already sees him accomplishing great things in his career and eventually making more money than former heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis did.

Maloney said to Sky Sports News “Lennox Lewis was perhaps the most individual richest sportsman our country [UK] has ever produced. I am convinced that David Price will go far beyond that.”

Wow! That’s a bit much for someone whose best of his career was against John McDermott. Don’t you think Maloney should wait a while before he starts putting that kind of pressure on Price? I mean we saw Price’s limitations exposed in the amateur ranks when he was matched against guys with good power that could punch back in Roberto Cammarelle and Bermane Stiverne. Both guys stopped Price. He does a good job against fighters with light to medium power, but against the big punchers, Price was blasted out as an amateur. That tells you something, doesn’t it? Price isn’t going to go very far unless Maloney puts some effort into getting Price a good trainer that can teach him some defense. Price gets hit far too often for his own good. In every fight I’ve seen him in, Price gets hit with labs and lead right hands. It didn’t seem to matter what his opposition was, Price still got hit.

Lewis had a reputation for having a questionable chin but he had good defensive skills and was smart to use his jab and clinch when facing guys with power. I don’t see that from Price. He doesn’t use his jab, doesn’t set up his power shots and doesn’t block punches the way that Lewis did. I think Price is going to have problems in the future when he steps it up a couple levels from the C level opposition he’s been facing his entire short career.

Price is trying to get a fight against British heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, but it’s unknown right now whether Fury will agree to defend his title against Price or choose to vacate it.
