Mathews, his left eye bloody and bruised, was dropped by a nice left to the body in the 6th and then in the 7th, Marsili pummeled Mathews on the ropes until the referee Howard John Foster stepped in to stop the fight and save Mathews from taking any more hard head shots from the powerful Italian.

I can’t say that Mathews was ever really doing well in the fight other than the 6th, when hurt Marsili with a shot that appeared to hurt the Italian’s left eye. Mathews than flurried on him, but Marsili was smart enough to clinch and ride out the attack.

In the same round, Marsili hit Mathews with a nice right hand that backed him up against the ropes. Mathews then covered up and this allowed Marsili to tee off on him with four straight right uppercuts to the head followed by a left to the body that put Mathews down briefly.

In the 4th round, Mathews’ nose was a bloody mess from the southpaw Marsili’s straight left hands. He made a real mess of Mathews’ nose in the round and I was thinking for a second that Mathews might get stopped in that round. He didn’t and fought okay in the 5th, but everything came apart in the 6th unfortunately.

Don’t know where Mathews can go from here. He might want to consider retirement.
