Image: Broner: Don't go for popcorn because Perez is going earlyBy Eric Thomas: WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (22-0, 18 KO’s) faces what appears to be the perfect opponent for him to look really good against on HBO on February 25th against the light hitting slugger Eloy Perez (23-0, 7 KO’s) at the Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Broner, 22, will be defending his World Boxing Organization title for the first time and had the benefit of facing an aggressive come forward opponent that still hasn’t fought anyone near good enough to make him alter his fearless fighting style. Perez, 25, may need to make some major adjustments to his usual attacking style for this fight if he wants to last long against the must more powerful and quicker Broner.

This isn’t a fight that Perez can win unless he figures out how to outbox Broner, because he won’t be him at his own game. Broner is too strong, too fast and much too accurate with his counter punching ability. Broner is literally like a smaller, younger replica of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and right now there’s simply nobody in the division that can beat him.

Broner told RingTV “Don’t go and get popcorn, because it will end early…I’m going to have fun.“

Perez has knocked out two out of his last five opponents but none of them have had the power or the skills to really test him in the way that Broner will. Perez has been able to plod forward and dominate lesser punchers without worry. But against Broner, he’s going to have to use his legs because he’s going to get hit too much in this fight.

In his last two fights, Perez has beaten Ira Terry and Daniel Jimenez but those guys weren’t able to trouble him with anything. Perez showed a nice left hook but little more than that. His right hand isn’t nearly as dangerous and he’s right there for big shots when he’s facing someone that can fight.
