Image: Arum wants Mayweather to call or text him so that he can put together Pacquiao-Mayweather fight for NovemberBy Chris Williams: Bob Arum is still waiting for a phone call from Floyd Mayweather Jr. to try and set up a fight with his number #1 cash cow fighter Manny Pacquiao. But instead of the wanting Mayweather to call or text him so that he can try and put together a fight for May, Arum only wants Mayweather to call him to work on a November fight.

Arum has already scratched Mayweather off Pacquiao’s list of potential opponents for his next fight, although Arum still hasn’t said who exactly Pacquiao plans on fighting in June. It’s going to be either Timothy Bradley or Miguel Cotto who gets the call.

It could be easily Cotto’s fight if he would agree to fight Pacquiao at 147, but he’s not been open to that weight. Cotto probably sees it as a basic fairness thing. He drained down to fight Pacquiao at a 145 pound catchweight in their fight in 2009, and ended up losing the fight probably because of it. Now he wants Pacquiao to come up a little to 150lbs to return the favor.

I sure hope Cotto doesn’t sit around with no other plans than this, because he’ll be waiting a long time if he thinks Pacquiao will be gracious and fight him at a catchweight to return the favor he did for the Filipino star in the past. That’s not going to happen, as it just doesn’t fit Pacquiao’s past negotiating behaviors. He kind of calls the shots and if he can’t get one of his opponents to give in one a certain thing, he’s ready to move on because there are plenty of other contenders that will agree to pretty much anything Pacquiao wants in order to get the payday.

Arum told Michael Marley at examiner.com “We can put this fight [Mayweather-Pacquiao] together now; not for May, of course, but put it together now for November. All Floyd has to do, as far as I’m concerned, is to phone us or to send a text to Todd [Luboef], who he communicates with in that manner anyway.”

Is Arum helpless or what? Why doesn’t he lift the phone and make the call? What is this? Is he too proud to call Mayweather in case he gets hung up on or clowned in some way or fashion? So what if Mayweather has some fun with him. It’s the promoters job to get in the gutter and work out fights with these guys. You can’t have a promoter that’s sitting back like Arum waiting for big game to come to him. That’s a really lazy and weak way of promoting in my view. It just looks like Arum is still making excuses and not serious about wanting to match Pacquiao with Mayweather.

It’ll look bad if Arum doesn’t at least go through the motions to give the appearance that he wants to match Pacquiao up with Mayweather, but this seems altogether far too obvious to me. Arum is still saying he doesn’t know who to contact to make the Mayweather fight.
