Image: Arum sees Donaire-Vazquez Jr. as being the better Chavez Jr-Rubio boutBy Chris Williams: Bob Arum has put together what he sees as a solid card on February 4th with former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (22-1-1, 18 KO’s) trying to get his career back together in a fight against former two time world champion Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) in a fight for the recently vacated World Boxing Organization super bantamweight title at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Also on this card in the main event will be WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. making his 2nd title defense against top ranked challenger Marco Antonio Rubio.

Arum told RingTV “Well, Vazquez never stops throwing punches. That should be a great fight. I think that’s a fight that could steal the show. It’s a great double-header that HBO is putting on February 4th.”

The Donaire-Vazquez fight figures to be a mismatch, as Vazquez was recently knocked out by Jorge Arce and didn’t look that great in that bout. He’s done little since then other than beating journeyman Roberto Carlos Leyva last October. Donaire will have a big size advantage of at least three to four inches and will be the heavier fighter as well.

Donaire does a great job against smaller fighters and Vazquez won’t be the exception to this rule. Arum doesn’t want his prize Donaire beaten, so any fights you see Donaire in will be pretty much mismatches with Donaire put in with guys that re really no threat to beating him. The two guys that would have an excellent chance of beating Donaire at super bantamweight are Rico Ramos and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

However, Arum doesn’t have an intention in putting Donaire in with those guys. As such, you see Donaire matched up against guys like Vazquez instead. Donaire should win this one without any problem because Vazquez is easy to hit and is so much smaller than Donaire. The problems for Donaire will come later, much later when Arum finally puts him in with someone that has the talent to beat him from his Top Rank stable like Juan Manuel Lopez or Yuriorkis Gamboa. Until then, don’t hold your breath waiting for Donaire to fight a real threat.

I think the Donaire vs. Vazquez Jr. fight might be a little better than Chavez Jr. vs. Rubio, but they’re both mismatches so it’s not that of a deal. They wouldn’t put Chavez Jr. in with Rubio if they didn’t see this as someone Chavez Jr. can knockout. The same with Donaire in with Vazquez.
