Image: Arthur Abraham to try and punch more against Pablo Farias on SaturdayBy Eric Thomas: It’s been eight months since former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (32-3, 26 KOs) last fought in losing by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision to WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward in the Super Six tournament.

Abraham will be fighting on Saturday against Argentinian Pablo Natalio Farias (19-1, 11 KO’s) at the Baden-Arena in Offenberg, Germany. Abraham, 31, is desperate to win this fight and has been working out hard for months trying to get back what he lost. He can’t afford to lose this fight and plans on trying to throw more punches. Not throwing punches enough punches was Abraham’s biggest problems in his three losses in the Super Six tournament and he plans on fixing that with this fight on Saturday night.

Abraham told ESPN “I trained all the time. No matter whether it was Saturday, Sunday, Christmas or New Year’s day; I did not miss a single training session….I have prepared well for the fight in Offenberg, but that is not any different from the last bouts. I will try to be more active, try to punch more.”

If Abraham isn’t doing anything different from his past training sessions, then how is he going to be a different fighter? Abraham’s problem wasn’t a lack of desire in the ring. He just seems to lack the endurance to fight three minute rounds. It doesn’t matter if it’s a one or two rounds, he just can’t fight for a full three minutes without taking a 2 ½ minute break. He’s a good 20 to 30 second fighter, but that’s it. He tires out if he fights for more than 30 seconds in a round and is completely useless in the next round. I fail to see Abraham suddenly being able to throw more punches because he finally understands what his problem has been in past fights. Of course, Abraham knew what he was doing wrong in his three losses but he just didn’t have the stamina to do anything about it.

I see Abraham knocking Farias out without any problem tomorrow. This is weak opponent picked out from the 2nd tier for Abraham to beat and get his confidence up. It won’t change anything in the future though. He’s going to struggle when he’s eventually put in with someone that can fight and evade his wild shots at the end of the rounds. That’s typically the only time Abraham fights hard – at the end of each round.
