Ward wants Kessler rematch; Froch thinks Kessler can win

Image: Ward wants Kessler rematch; Froch thinks Kessler can winBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) would like nothing better than to get another shot against Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33 KO’s) and show that his 11th round technical decision win over him from two years ago wasn’t a fluke.

Kessler looked overmatched, slow and not skilled enough on defensive compared to the then 25-year-old Ward. Now two years later, Ward appears just as good if not better than he was then, as he showed in making WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch look silly in a beating the Brit by a 12 round decision. Froch incredibly thinks Kessler can beat Ward in a rematch.

Why Froch thinks this is unclear, as he went life and death with Kessler last year and barely lost a 12 round decision. Just by looking at how Ward defeated Kessler in the past and how easily Ward by Froch last weekend, it would seem fairly conclusive that Ward would be the stuffing out of Kessler in a rematch and leave him as black and blue as he did the last time they fought in 2009.

I’m not really surprised Froch is picking Kessler, because it’s got to be hard to give credit to someone that just beat you as bad Ward did to Froch last Saturday. Kessler did the same thing recently, not doing the smart thing by picking Froch to beat Ward instead of the more reasonable pick of choosing the talented Ward to whip Froch.

The issue with a Ward-Kessler rematch is that it would mean a lot of down time for Ward, because Kessler has decided to go after the WBO paper champion Robert Stieglitz and that fight doesn’t happen until April next year. Ward would have to sit on his back side for two-thirds of the year if he wants the Kessler fight to be his next fight.

It just doesn’t make sense when you think about it, and Kessler isn’t going to flush that easy fight down the toilet for a rematch with Ward, even though it would likely mean more money for him. The Stieglitz fight is one that Kessler can win, but not the Ward fight. At any rate, I don’t see Kessler ever taking the Ward rematch. He may talk about it but when push comes to shove, Kessler will probably do what Stieglitz has been doing since he won the WBO belt in 2008 and just fight scrubs to milk the title.
