Image: Peterson is going to wreck Khan's world this SaturdayBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan has had a nice cushy ride lately with the help of careful matchmaking by his promoters at Golden Boy, but this Saturday night the ride is going to hit a brick wall in the form of Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KO’s) at the Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Khan’s soft match-making is going to come back at bite him dead center in the backside when he goes into shock by finally being put in with someone that can actually fight instead of just flop around like the stiffs he’s been fed since the Marcos Maidana fight.

Peterson, 27, has got amazing skills and is someone that has been groomed for this fight since he turned pro seven years ago in 2004. Peterson has had his bumps and bruises along the way with a loss to Timothy Bradley and a 10 round draw against Victor Ortiz, but he wasn’t at 100% for either of those fights.

On Saturday, Peterson will be at optimal power against the glass-jawed Khan and is going to find the weak jaw and break it with some hard shots. At best, I can’t see Khan lasting more than six rounds in this one. He’s too overconfident due to all the stiffs he’s been fed and he thinks he can walk on water.

Just listen to the guy talk it’s as if he’s ready for the hall of fame and isn’t cognizant to what’s going on with his soft matchmaking. The thing is when you get up there and you’re supposed to be a pound-for-pound type fighter, it forces that fighter to finally take on quality opposition instead of easy touches.

His management literally has to put Khan in with a live body now because it’s becoming a joke to see him put in so softly every time out. So Peterson is going to be a like a big pool of freezing cold water for Khan to dive into on Saturday.

Khan is going to jump in thinking it’s warm water, pleasant to the touch, but he’s going to find out it’s freezing as heck and he’s going to quickly go into shock when Peterson starts raining punches down on him. Peterson is the same height as Khan, but has a longer reach by a couple of inches. Peterson is the much better inside fighter, and has power that is about as good as Khan’s.

They’re equal in size, power, but not in skill and heart. Peterson has the better skills and the much bigger heart to go along with his superior inside fighting ability. I see him getting in close and working Khan over, and braining him with a big right hand to the head when Khan wraps arms up like he seems to always do when he fights. With one hand free, Peterson will clock Khan, and this time there won’t be a referee to save Khan like there was in the Maidana fight. I suppose there will be some tears from Khan’s loving fans who will be broken-hearted about the loss, but it’s a good thing really. When you’re being strung a long artificially by taking on weak opposition it creates a mirage that isn’t real. At this way a little sunlight will be shed on Khan’s career and fans can see him for his true talent level. It’s all good. He’s a great fighter matched against the right kind of opposition. I’m sure Golden Boy will build him back up with another string of weak punchers to inflate his record and distort the perception of the part time boxing fans who don’t have much knowledge about the sport.
