He’s now targeting WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KO’s), and challenged him to a fight last night at Povetkin’s post fight press conference after he had defeated 42-year-old challenger Cedric Boswell by an 8th round TKO.

Huck ran up to the podium and shouted “I have defended my title eight times, I need a new challenge at heavyweight.” Instead of ignoring Huck, Povetkin said “Let’s get it on.”

Somehow this is kind of fitting. Povekin is considered a paper champion at heavyweight by a lot of boxing fans, and instead of taking on a quality contender last night, he dug up the 42-year-old number #14 WBA ranked Boswell to fight instead of a higher quality opponent.

Povetkin has been linked to a possible fight against 49-year-old Evander Holyfield recently. A fight against Huck, who hasn’t proven he’s the best fighter at cruiserweight, seems about right for a kind of a joke fight.

Huck got a gift decision against Denis Lebedev last year in December that compared similarly with the decision Robert Helenius received against Dereck Chisora last night. Instead of giving Lebedev a rematch, Huck has ignored Lebedev’s requests for another fight and moved on and defeated lower ranked top 15 contenders Ran Nakash, Hugo Hernan Garay and Rogelio Omar Rossi in what appears to be a prolonged milking of his WBO title.

As you would expect, none of those fights have been competitive in the least, yet Huck still isn’t showing any inclination to fight Lebedev again. Huck recently called out WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko for a fight. However, Vitali doesn’t take him seriously and doesn’t waste time on such a horrible mismatch. But it looks like Povetkin may take the fight.

I’m not sure how the WBA could allow a Huck-Povetkin fight to take place, as Povetkin just fought his voluntary title defense and you expect it would be time for him to face his mandatory challenger in his next fight.

Unfortunately, the No.1 ranked WBA contender right now is 38-year-old Hasim Rahman, which another easy title defense for Povetkin. A choice between Huck and Rahman is about the same in terms of quality. Neither of them would stand a chance against Povetkin, and that’s not saying Povetkin is a great fighter. It just means that Rahman is old and well past his prime. And Huck is a 200 pound cruiserweight who fights in spurts, but is lacking in boxing skills.

Povetkin would easily outwork Huck. However, with the fight taking place in Germany, it’s hard to say who would win. Although Povetkin is a German based fighter, Huck is really well liked over there. I think it would be tough for Povetkin to get a decision against Huck unless he knocked him out. I don’t care how badly Povetkin beats Huck, I can’t see him getting a decision over this guy in Germany.
