Marco Antonio Rubio makes easy work of Vanda, stops him in five
By Jim Dower: In a stay busy fight for number #1 ranked WBC middleweight contender Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1, 46 KO’s) he took out journeyman Matt Vanda (44-14, 24 KO’s) in the 5th round on Friday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Rubio, who has been waiting patiently for a title shot against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. with no luck, bludgeoned the wide open Vanda with power shots to the head and body. Vanda looked already beaten up by the 4th round and clearly wasn’t going to last too much longer with the way that Rubio was unloading on him.
In the 5th, Rubio blasted a badly hurt Vanda at will until referee Kenny Bayliss stepped in to halt the slaughter at 2:42 of the 5th round. Despite getting the win, Rubio still isn’t any closer to a title shot against Chavez Jr. The WBC mandated that Chavez Jr. must face former World Boxing Council middleweight champion Sergio Martinez next. The only way Rubio gets a shot now if by waiting or if Chavez vacates or is stripped of his title, which is a very real possibility.
