Khan or Can’t care who wins?

Image: Khan or Can't care who wins?By Jordan Ross: ‘What are your plans for the Amir Khan fight?’ I was asked this yesterday afternoon and my very first thought was replying ‘sleeping’, but I refrained. I then got into a conversation with my friend about Amir Khan and it became clear to me just how uninterested I am in the Bolton fighter.

It wasn’t always like this though.

Going back to 2005, the excitement in the UK around Amir Khan was massive. This young kid had completely taken everyone by surprise and battled his way to a silver medal in the previous years olympics. He then followed it by signing a long term deal with Frank Warren & ITV for his professional debut.

Khan fever had definitely taken over the UK Boxing scene. It was something to get excited about. We had Hatton & Calzaghe doing the business, but we had not had an exciting fighter since Nasseem Hamed called it quits.

The excitement behind Khan soon started to die down a bit as he wasn’t that impressive.

He was stopping fighters, but he still had a lot to learn. He was getting caught with shots that he just shouldn’t have been and even ended up on the wrong end of a few knock downs. In Khans defense he did battle back from the knock downs to win his fights.

But by this time, my interest in his was starting to fade. But he was still popular within the boxing community.

Popular enough for Sky Sports to sign him up and promote his fight against heavy fisted Columbian Breidis Prescott. How I bet they didn’t! The fight itself lasted 54 seconds. Khan was knocked down badly by Prescott, although he did make it up in the duration of the count, Prescott’s next left hand completely took Khan out of the fight and the referee stopped it.

In Amir’s defense, I do not think he can be blamed too much for this fight. His trainer at the time was Cuban Jorge Rubio, who’s idea it was to put the ‘glass-chinned’ Khan in with the big puncher. It was never going to end well.

Not surprisingly, Khans promoter at the time Frank Warren sacked and publicly slated Rubio.

Then came the turn around in Amir Khans career, the link up with Freddie Roach. What a career move this was.

Roach took Khan completely out of the boxing scene and trained him hard. He also trained Khan how to have a good defense and they also changed the body shape of Khan. Made him broader and worked on his shoulders. Roach knew that Amirs chin wasn’t the best, so they taught him how to defend that chin so it would be hard for opposition to land on it.

Khan as a boxer had completely changed. He came back to beat Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera on an early points stoppage. A really big milestone for the Bolton fighter.

During Khans next few fights, we saw a really improved fighter. Easy defeats of Kotelnik, Salita and Malignaggi showcased how hard Freddie Roach had worked with him and made him a better fighter. But Amir still lacked the likability factor.

The defining moment for me of Khans career came in 2011 in his fight against Marcos Maidana. Maidana was and is a good fighter, but another big puncher. A big puncher who was due to test that ‘glass jaw’ of Amir. In all fairness to Khan, he stood and took everything the Argentine had to offer and beat him on points in one of the fights of the year. Khan had finally established himself on the boxing map, but still the UK press and boxing community were not behind him.

Since the fight with Miadana, Khan has gone onto wins over Paul Mccloskey and Zab Judah. I also expect him to easily beat Lamont Peterson on Saturday night.

Peterson is a very good technical fighter, but Khans work-rate, speed and power will be way too much for him. But the question I find myself asking, like I have a lot of Khans opponents….Will the win actually be that impressive?

How can a win against Lamont Peterson put you in the shop window for a fight with Floyd Mayweather?

Who has Khan actually fought that makes you think he could take on Mayweather?

From a UK Boxing fans point of view, I Just cant get behind Amir. He strikes me as someone that wants to do things the easy way, someone who comes across as a bit of a cocky idiot on twitter and someone that a lot of Brits want to see lose.

I wont be watching the fight live on Sky Sports on Sunday. I will Sky Plus it and watch it Sunday afternoon. That way I do not have to listen to the ‘King’ go on about Mayweather, id rather hear him talk about a fight with Kel Brook!
