Khan badly wants rematch against Peterson, but why not Prescott?

Image: Khan badly wants rematch against Peterson, but why not Prescott?By William Mackay: What seems rather strange to me is why Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) so badly wants a rematch against Lamont Peterson after losing a narrow 12 round decision against him last week. Ever since Khan was beaten by Peterson, Khan has been up in arms saying he got robbed by the judges and the referee, and appealing the decision to the sanctioning bodies to try and get it overturned.

But why didn’t Khan try and get a rematch against the hard hitting Breidis Prescott when he knocked Khan out in the 1st round three years ago? Khan showed no fire in that case and never even attempted to avenge the loss. For boxing fans who don’t understand the difference between Peterson and Prescott let me explain.

Peterson isn’t much of a puncher at least when it comes to throwing to the head. He’s a decent body puncher, but he’s not nearly the slugger that Prescott is. If Khan had faced Prescott again, he’d have had to take some huge shots in order to win and it’s questionable whether Khan could take those shots. Peterson, though, doesn’t have Prescott’s kind of power and Khan can take those kinds of power shots without going down.

It’s not that Prescott is a great fighter, because he can be out-boxed as we saw in his fights against Kevin Mitchell and Miguel Vazquez. He can also be worn down and stopped, which is what happened against Mike Alvarado. However, to get to that point you have to be able to take some monstrous shots from him early on, and it’s doubtful that Khan has the chin to take those kinds of shots. But it does look bad the way that Khan is selective about the fighters he wants to avenge his defeats against. Avenging a loss to Peterson is fine, but not against Prescott. The Prescott was much, much worse for Khan, yet he doesn’t want any part of trying to get revenge.
