Kell Brook wants to fight Mike Jones for IBF strap
By Sean McDaniel: Undefeated Kell Brook (26-0, 18 KO’s) feels he’s ready to take on number #3 ranked IBF welterweight contender Mike Jones (26-0, 19 KO’s) for the vacant International Boxing Federation title after the 25-year-old Brook stopped Puerto Rican Luis Galarza in the 5th round last Saturday night on the Carl Froch vs. Andre Ward undercard at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
That was the last of the easy fight for Britain’s Brook, as he’s ready to step it up in a major way by taking on the 6-foot Jones if Jones’ promoter Bob Arum will allow him to take the fight.
Brook told RingTV “I’ll take Mike Jones. I’ll fight him in Atlantic City, and I’ll destroy him.” The hard hitting counter punching Brook has always liked that match-up and has been interested in taking on Jones for quite some time.
But now that the IBF belt is open Brook has Jones in a position where he’ll soon have to fight him if he wants to try and claim the title. At 28, Jones can’t wait around forever to go after a title because he’s in his prime now and likely won’t be getting too much better from this point.
Brook looked great in hurting Galarza with short left hooks and right hands. He made Galarza pay each time he would throw a shot. This is going to be a problem for Jones as well, because he’s not a very good fighter on the inside and he doesn’t look good when dealing with pressure.
Jones defeated Sebastian Lujan by a 12 round decision earlier this month on December 3rd in a dominating performance by Jones.
