Image: Kell Brook isnt ready for Berto, but he beats KhanBy William Mackay: After Kell Brook (26-0, 18 KO’s) stopped Luis Galarza last Saturday night on the undercard of the Carl Froch vs. Andre Ward bout, Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn said that Brook will likely be challenging for a title against one of the welterweight champions in 2012.

I think that’s a really bad idea unless they can somehow line up a fight against WBA champion Vyacheslav Senchnko, because Brook isn’t ready to take on IBF champion Andre Berto, and there’s no possible way that Hearn will be able to land a fight against the other two welterweight champions WBO champ Manny Pacquiao and WBC title holder Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hearn must be thinking of matching Brook against Berto and I think that he’s going down the wrong street if he does that. While Brook looked okay against the limited Galarza, he was getting hit cleanly with left hooks and lead right hands from Galarza when he had the sense to throw punches. I don’t like the way that Brook was getting hit cleanly by these shots, and I think Berto would make a mess of Brook. He lacks the hand speed and the arm length to beat a fighter like Berto, and I don’t think he ever will be good enough to beat that guy.

That’s not all bad, though. Brook does look more than good enough to destroy Amir Khan if he ever decides on taking him on. Brook would be a lot of problems for Khan because of his short power shots, and his excellent accuracy. Khan would have to run the entire fight and I can’t see him being able to do that. Brook would get to him eventually and take him out. Khan is making a big mistake if he moves up to welterweight and tangles with Brook.

He doesn’t have the chin to beat Brook. I think it’s perfect fight for Brook, because I can’t see him doing much at welterweight in terms of winning any titles. He might pick up an interim strap or maybe even the WBA title if Senchenko ever decides to fight him. But the real quality welterweights will beat him every time.

Hearn needs to start putting Brook in with some transition fighters because he’s kept him at the lower level opposition far too long. You have him jump from B to A and he’s going to get knocked out no doubt.
