Image: Helenius likely to destroy Chisora this SaturdayBy Sean McDaniel: Dereck Chisora (15-1, 9 KO’s) is stepping up against unbeaten Robert Helenius (16-0, 11 KO’s) this Saturday in a fight that will take place at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland.

Pretty much no one is giving Chisora a chance in this fight because he’s an undersized heavyweight and he’s looked mediocre in fights against Tyson Fury and Sam Sexton in the past year. He is good at drumming excitement for fights with his comments and actions, but he’s failed to live up to the hype he creates in the ring.

Helenius is going to have at leave half a foot height advantage and a half foot in reach as well. Helenius also hits a lot harder and has a much better jab than Chisora. The only way Chisora can win this fight is to get inside and flurry. But Chisora’s stamina is suspect.

To be sure, Chisora can really go for about three rounds all out, but after that he tends to fade in his fights. The thing is Helenius will be backing up and not letting Chisora crowd him. He’s good at doing a lot of the same things that IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko does against shorter fighters, such as tying them up, using his jab and retreating when attacked.

It’s not hard to see that Helenius has watched a lot of Wladimir’s fights and has adopted things that Wladimir uses in the ring. He’s not as good as Wladimir, but he’s close enough to make things mighty tough for a limited fighter like Chisora. However, the way to defeat Helenius is the same way you beat Wladimir, and that’s by pressuring him, getting in close and really hammering to the head and body.

Helenius rarely gets hit in the midsection and he looks soft down there. That’s an area where Helenius needs to devote some of his attention in this fight. He may discover that Helenius can’t take it to the body. The big Finnish fighter usually dishes out one-way punishment in his fights and rarely gets hit all that much. He could fall apart if Chisora is able to work his way to the inside and work on his body. I wouldn’t waste too much time on going for his head early in the fight because Helenius appears to take a very good shot, but that could change if Chisora can wear down his body in the early part of the fight.
