Froch: I’m the #2 fighter in the super middleweight division

Image: Froch: I'm the #2 fighter in the super middleweight divisionBy Scott Gilfoid: I don’t mind a fighter doing as bit of crowing after a big win or some kind of accomplishment like winning an award, but I don’t understand how Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s) can be bragging about himself coming off of his one-sided 12 round decision loss to Andre Ward in the Super Six tournament last Saturday. He should be crying right about now instead of boasting about the loss.

Froch said this “I can call myself the number #2 super middleweight fighter at this point, which isn’t a bad title. It was a tough fight, one I thought I could have won. Two of the judges had it scored seven rounds to five for me, so this was a lot closer than a lot of people around are making it out to be in the national press. The British press is very negative anyway.”

I honestly don’t know how Froch could say this with a straight face because no way did he win five rounds. The two judges that gave Froch five rounds must have been seeing double that night because Froch only appeared to win two rounds on most boxing fans’ scorecards. I gave him two rounds with one of the rounds being a mercy round.

Froch looked terrible and old, like a worn out fighter. The thing is he was fighting a guy with a broken left hand in Ward, who suffered multiple fractures in his left hand a week before the fight and still took the bout. Ward was limited to only being able to jab with his left rather than using it for throwing power shots, and yet he still dominated Froch with ease.

As far as Froch being the number #2 fighter in the super middleweight division goes, I think Froch is dreaming. How can he say he’s number #2 when he was beaten by Mikkel Kessler last year? Kessler hasn’t lost a fight since then, so you would have to still assume that he should be ranked above Froch in terms of who the best fighters are in the division. And you still have to consider the unbeaten IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute at #1 or #2 given his unbeaten record and his dominance of his opposition. Froch, with his losses to Ward and Kessler, can’t be ranked above Kessler and Bute in the division.

Here’s how I see the super middleweight division shaking out right now:

1. Lucian Bute
2. Andre Ward
3. Mikkel Kessler
4. Carl Froch
5. Anthony Dirrell
6. Andre Dirrell
7. Sakio Bika
