Froch: I think I could beat Ward in a rematch

Image: Froch: I think I could beat Ward in a rematchBy William Mackay: Well, it didn’t take long for former World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s) to start talking about a rematch against WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s). Froch was beaten by Ward earlier tonight by a 12 round unanimous decision in the Super Six finals and to put it mildly, Froch looked atrocious.

He was too slow and not able to cope with Ward on the inside and incredibly on the outside either. There was no area in Froch’s game where he was superior to Ward. Two of the judges scored it 115-113, but a more realistic score would be 120-108. That’s about as good as Froch fought.

Froch told sportinglife.com “Up close he was leaning on me, he seemed to be able to get his head there, get his shoulder in the way. He’s either up close smothering your work or he’s too far out of range. I could never get my shots away. I honestly feel I could beat Andre Ward on a good night. I’d have to work on some technical things.”
On a good night? What kind of good night is Froch talking about? I don’t know what Froch could do with his game that would get him a win in a rematch with Ward.

It seemed to be that Ward had Froch from the get go because of his speed advantage and his ability to duck under Froch’s looping shots to get inside on him. Froch had no inside game coming into this fight, and tonight he still no skills on the inside. Ward dominated Froch and even bullied him at times in close.

If Froch is referring to his inside game as some of the technical things he’d work out, I don’t think he’s going to have much luck. He’s got too much learn and not enough time to learn it. And besides, Ward isn’t going to waste time fighting Froch again unless Froch starts knocking off all the big names in the division one by one. He’s going to have to do it in a hurry because at 34, Froch doesn’t have a lot of time before age starts becoming a factor for him.
