Morales and Garcia were supposed to be fighting next month on January 28th, but Morales’ recent emergency gallbladder surgery made it necessary for Morales to postpone the fight for him to heal properly. The entire Golden Boy promoted card, which had James Kirkland facing Carlos Molina as the co-feature, was also postponed along with the Morales-Garcia fight.

As of now, there still isn’t a venue for the fight but that should be announced soon.

Morales will be making his first defense of his WBC belt he won last September against fringe contender Pablo Cesar Cano in a 10th round stoppage. Morales looked old, flabby around the midsection, and not nearly the fighter he once was 10 years ago when he was battling Marco Antonio Barrera. This could be Morales’ only defense of his title, because Garcia may have too much youth, speed, power and size for Morales in this fight. Morales was at his best when he was fighting in the super bantamweight division [122lbs].

Now Morales looks like a super bantamweight carrying an extra 18 pounds of flab on his frame. The extra weight hasn’t helped Morales any and it’s hard to see him holding this paper title down for any length of time despite Garcia not really being in the same class as guys like Timothy Bradley, Marcos Maidana or Amir Khan.
