Image: Broner makes first defense against PerezBy Allen Fox: WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (22-0, 18 KO’s) makes his first defense of his title on February 25th against unbeaten #2 ranked contender Eloy Perez (23-0-2, 7 KO’s) at the Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Broner, 22, will be sporting a substantial speed and power advantage against the light hitting Perez. Indeed, Broner is the much faster and stronger fighter in this bout and it’s hard to see Perez doing much in this fight unless he can come up with some power and speed he hasn’t yet shown.

Perez, 25, is taking a huge step up in class at the same time and that is going to be a problem as well for him. Perez has been toiling away beating the likes of little known fighters Alejandro Rodriguez, Daniel Jimenez and Ira Terry in the past year, while Broner has faced and beaten Daniel Ponce De Leon, Jason Litzau and Vincente Maria Rodrgiuez.

The competition levels that the two fighters have faced are incredibly far apart. Perez has been coddled with weak opposition and Broner has been put in tough. This is going to be a bit of a shock for Perez when he sees how much better Broner is compared to his previous opposition when the fight starts in the 1st round. Maybe Perez can make some adjustments but I doubt it.

If he tries to open up with his offense, he’s going to be creating huge opportunities for the counter punching Broner to take advantage by landing his big counters. I’d be surprised if Perez can make it the full 12.

I just can’t see it. Perez will get desperate and will walk into one of Broner’s sneaky right hands or left hooks and get dropped. Once Broner has Perez hurt, it will be over quickly because he’s a great finisher.
