Image: Arum says June 2012 the likely date for Mayweather-Pacquiao mega fightBy Chris Williams: With WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather potentially facing some jail time for his plea bargain to escape a felony conviction for domestic violence involving his the mother of his three children, Mayweather could find himself receiving a jail sentence of between several days to as long as year and half in a worst case scenario.

Bob Arum, the promoter for Manny Pacquiao, is worried that a Mayweather jail term could get in the way of him putting together a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight this coming year. However, if Mayweather gets away with just a light sentence of a few days, Arum sees the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight taking place in June of next year.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Arum is looking to have a 45,000 seat arena built in Las Vegas on the strip. This runs counter to what Mayweather’s advisor is talking about, as he was looking at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5th, not in June. Arum doesn’t like May 5th, though, saying “That’s Cinco de Mayo and too early.”

It sounds like Arum is kind of going in his own direction apart from what Mayweather wants. This could be another deal breaker, as we’ve seen before. Arum might be better off agreeing with Mayweather on the May date if he’s serious about wanting to match his cash cow fighter Pacquiao up against Mayweather. If Arum is just looking at posturing and has no intention of risking Pacquiao against Mayweather, then Arum is doing a great job in disagreeing on dates and on the venue. That’s definitely a good way of destroying the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
