Image: Andre Dirrell vs. Darryl Cunningham, Jermain Taylor vs. Jessie Nicklow on Friday night on SHOWTIMEBy Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday night, SHOWTIME will be televising one of their best cards of the entire year when super talented Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO’s) stages his long awaited comeback against Darryl Cunningham (24-2, 10 KO’s) in 10 rounds of action at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California.

Along with this great fight will be Jermain Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KO’s) making his comeback against Jessie Nicklow (22-2-3, 8 KO’s) also in a 10 round bout. It’s difficult to say which is the better fight because both Dirrell and Taylor have exceptional talent that a lot of other less talented fighters would die far.

Dirrell, 28, needs to make up for a lot lost time after his year layoff from boxing when he was injured by Arthur Abraham last year in the Super Six tournament. Dirrell has slipped on the canvas and was in a sitting position when Abraham teed off on him and knocked Dirrell unconscious. Abraham was immediately disqualified and Dirrell given the victory. However, the victory proved to be a hallow one, as Dirrell suffered lingering headaches and dizzy spells for months after. The symptoms have since disappeared and Dirrell has passed the required medical exams to make his comeback. He wants to look sharp and get an impressive win so he can start chasing down the super middleweight champions in the division.

Dirrell along with his brother Anthony and Andre Ward are perhaps the three best fighters in the super middleweight division right now in the talent department. There are obviously a couple of other good fighters in Lucian Bute and Carl Froch, but I don’t rate either of them in the same class as the Dirrell brothers and Ward. These guys are pretty special fighters with their hand speed, power and defensive ability.

Dirrell will easily beat Cunningham and make it look like he was never away.

Taylor has chosen a respectable opponent in 24-year-old Nicklow. This isn’t an easy fight necessarily because Nicklow has some skills and a little bit of pop in his punches. Nicklow has won two straight fights since fighting to a draw with Julius Kennedy last year in September. Taylor needs to jump on this guy early and look to blow him out with speed and combinations.

You don’t want to leave Nicklow in there and risk having him land a big homerun punch to maybe get Taylor out of there. Nicklow is obviously going to be looking to test Taylor’s chin, because of how Taylor was knocked out badly in his last two fights in two 12th round knockouts to Abraham and Froch. In both cases, Taylor was dominating the fight but ran out of gas and was susceptible to power shots in the last round.

Both Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell are amazing talents and it’s a real treat to have them both on the same card.
