Andre Dirrell: I want Lucian Bute!

Image: Andre Dirrell: I want Lucian Bute!By Scott Gilfoid: Moments after watching his younger brother unbeaten super middleweight contender Anthony Dirrell (24-0, 21 KO’s) make easy work of #2 ranked WBC contender Renan St Juste in a 4th round TKO victory last night to become the WBC super middleweight mandatory challenger, Andre Dirrell shouted “I want Lucia Bute!” This came after Anthony’s trainer Leon Lawson said he wanted Bute next for Anthony. However, Andre turned towards Lawson and said “I want Lucian Bute.”

You could see a little battle going on for which Dirrell brother gets to take on Bute next year. I didn’t really matter which one, because both Dirrell brothers are incredibly talented and will be big time problems for the Canadian based Bute. Andre fights a tune-up bout later on this month on December 30th against Darryl Cunningham at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California. This fight occurs on the same card as Jermain Taylor’s comeback fight.

Once Dirrell gets this fight out of the way, he wants to go after Bute. However, he’s going to have to work that out with his younger brother Anthony, who is now WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s mandatory challenger. That’s kind of a meaningless thing though because Froch is facing WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward on December 17th in the Super Six tournament finals and Froch is expected to lose that fight. Anthony will then be facing Ward in a fight that will be an extremely exciting bout, although maybe a little premature because Anthony is still kind of an unknown in the boxing world. The fight needs to take place in a year or so in order for it to be a huge fight, because by then Anthony will be better known by then.

I’d pick either of the Dirrell brothers to take care of Bute without too many problems. Bute has been very carefully matched the entire three years he’s held the International Boxing Federation title and he would be like going from 2nd tier to the very top of the 1st tier if and when he faces Andre or Anthony Dirrell.
