Image: Pacquiao: Victim of his own successBy Frank (Frankly) Livingstone: The year 2008 was a great year for Manny Pacquiao as he scored three victories during the year. In March, he won a split decision over Juan Manuel Marquez to win the WBC and the Ring Super Featherweight crown.

In June, he won by TKO in the 9th round over David Diaz to win the WBC lightweight title. Finally in December, he won again by TKO in the 8th round over the legendary Oscar De La Hoya at the welterweight division. So in one year, Manny has fought and won at three different weight divisions and captured two world titles. Quite spectacular.

2008 was also the first year that Floyd Mayweather was enjoying his semi-retirement after his TKO win over Ricky Hatton in December 2007. And as we know it, Nature abhors a vacuum. The boxing world was looking for the next big thing and Manny’s upset victory over Oscar was the trigger that elevated him to what he is at the moment: the number one pound for pound in the world.

Maybe out of boredom, someone stealing his limelight or some unpaid tax, Floyd Mayweather made a decision for a comeback in 2009 and announcing his fight with Marquez at the eve of the Pacquiao/Hatton fight. Both Manny and Floyd won their fights that set up a possible dream mega fight between the two prize fighters. But as we all know it, the mega fight remains a dream due to the contentious issue of the random blood testing.

We can argue all night on who is to blame but one thing is certain. The reason for the RBT is to prove whether Pacquiao is really a freak of nature (that may never come again in our lifetime) or is simply a fraud. Whatever Floyd’s real intention is, the spotlight remains on Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is truly a victim of his own success.
