Image: Khan will fight Kell Brook but only if he leaves Matchroom Sport: Is this just an excuse?By William Mackay: In a sign that suggests that IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) isn’t too eager to fight unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (25-0, 17 KO’s), Khan is reportedly saying he’ll only fight Brook if he leaves his current promoters Matchroom Sport. It seems that Khan isn’t happy with them after facing one of their fighters Paul McCloskey last April and looking terrible against him. Khan didn’t like the bickering that went on after the fight, which ended with a headbutt in the 6th.

But using that as an excuse not to fight Brook is pretty weak if you ask me. It’s like Khan is fishing for excuses not to fight someone. If he does that with everyone, I suppose he can really whittle down the opposition to pretty much nobody. He’s already making excuses not to fight Breidis Prescott again despite having been knocked out in the 1st round by him in 2008. And he’s equally got excuses for not facing Marcos Maidana again despite the fact Maidana had Khan staggering around the ring last December. Instead of facing those guys again, Khan chose to fight McCloskey in a real stinker of a fight. After that, Khan faced an old Zab Judah and won after cranking down on his left with his left and nailing him with a shot on the beltline while holding his head down.

I think Brook would give Khan a lot of problems. Brook is flawed in that he lacks hand speed and arm length, but he’s better than McCloskey and an old Judah at this point in his career.

It might not matter that Khan isn’t interested in facing the dangerous Brook because Khan may not even get past his next opponent Lamont Peterson on December 10th on HBO and Sky. If Khan doesn’t win that fight then it really doesn’t matter that he’s not interested in fighting Brook because it will be Brook who’s moving forward with his career and Khan on the backward slide.
