Hatton: Mayweather would likely beat Pacquiao by a lopsided decision

Image: Hatton: Mayweather would likely beat Pacquiao by a lopsided decisionBy Chris Williams: Ricky Hatton thinks a future bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be an anti-climactic one with Mayweather easily beating the Filipino fighter by a lopsided 12 round decision. Hatton has been in with both fighters, and although he was taken out in the 2nd round by Pacquiao and beaten by a 10th round TKO by Mayweather, Hatton still sees Mayweather beating the starch off of Pacquiao.

Hatton told the telegraph.co.uk “I thought Manny had problems with [Juan Manuel] Marquez’s style. Pacquiao is a pure fighter. On the strength of that contest and performance, it’s hard to see how Manny would beat Floyd Mayweather if they actually ever meet in the ring…It could actually be an anti-climax because it could be a wide points decision for Floyd over Manny.”

Hatton saw Marquez beating Pacquiao “By about two rounds.”

Hatton is right about both fights, of course. Pacquiao did lose to Marquez by at least two rounds, possibly more. And Mayweather would be far too skilled for the shorter, much cruder Pacquiao. It would be a virtual shutout for Mayweather, much easier than his fights against Victor Ortiz, Marquez and even Hatton. Pacquiao is too sloppy and with his all out attacks, Mayweather would have countless opportunities to land counter punches all night long. Mayweather would be like a hungry kid in a candy store in a fight with Pacquiao, because there would be so many openings for him to humiliate Pacquiao.

As you can see, Bob Arum, the promoter for Pacquiao, is dragging his feet about putting Pacquiao in with Mayweather. Arum doesn’t seem eager to make the fight happen, and I now think he never was serious about the fight in the first place. The posturing and everything made Pacquiao look good, because it gave the impression that Arum wanted him to fight Mayweather. But as you can see now, Arum doesn’t want the fight. Pacquiao becomes just another fighter after Mayweather whips him. The gravy train will be over, and he may have to struggle to get air time.
