Image: Dib crushes ServideiBy Dan Ambrose: Making his first defense of his IBF featherweight title, champion Billy Dib (33-1, 20 KO’s) easily beat #8 ranked International Boxing Federation challenger Alberto Servidei (31-1-2, 7 KO’s) by a 1st round knockout on Saturday night at the Homebush Sports Centre in Sydney, Australia.

Dib, 26, hurt Servidei with a right hand and appeared to knock him down only to have the referee rule it wasn’t a knockdown. But Dib poured it on unloading with a storm of punches while Servidei tried to cover up against the ropes. Dib finally put him down with a left to the body in the corner. Servidei sat with his back against the ropes and never even attempted to get up. The fight was officially halted at 2:38 of the round by referee Pete Podgorski.

Servidei, who came into the fight with an unbeaten record, was the perfect opponent for Dib in that Servidei had a flashy eye-catching record going into the fight, but no hand speed, little power and poor defense. Dib was able to tee off on the painfully slow Servidei with mostly right hands without having to worry about anything coming back at him. Having seen Dib in the past get easily beaten by Steven Luevano by a lopsided 12 round decision, Dib looked sensational against the little known Servidei.

It was great match-making by Dib’s management to select Servidei for Dib to fight because there are a number of challengers that likely would have beaten Dib without any problems. But Servidei was perfect. Not sure why the IBF had Servidei ranked so highly, as none of the other sanctioning bodies have him ranked in the top 15, but it sure worked out well for Dib. He gets an easy win against a guy who had a nice record.
