Mormeck: Wladimir has a glass chin; I’m going to win a suitcase full of belts from him

Image: Mormeck: Wladimir has a glass chin; I'm going to win a suitcase full of belts from himBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) sees IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) as vulnerable to his big shots and he intends on knocking the Ukrainian out on December 10th when the two fighters meet at the ESPRIT arena, Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

“I had [David] Haye on the canvas and shortly before a knockout, which Klitschko could not do,” Mormeck said in an interview by Dan Rafael at ESPN. “What I missed out against Haye I will now do with him. Wladimir has a glass chin which I will break. He cannot stand big punches. Against his brother Vitali I would have thought longer about fighting him, but against Wladimir I believe I have very good chances. On December 11, I will travel back to Paris with a suitcase full of championship belts.”

Mormeck is similar to Haye in that they both saw Wladimir as the weaker Klitschko brother and the one to target. Haye didn’t do so well against Wladimir last July, losing by a lopsided 12 round decision. Wladimir didn’t just stand and trade with Haye like a lot of the older heavyweights that Haye fought to get the title shot against Wladimir. Instead, Wladimir used his jab and a lot of movement to keep Haye from having a stationary target to land his shots. However, in the end, it was Wladimir who was chasing Haye around instead of vice versa. It’s highly likely that Wladimir will be the one going after the short Mormeck, although he really doesn’t have to because it would be far easier to just pound Mormeck from long distance than it would to try and punish him.

The 5’11”, 39-year-old Mormeck is a huge underdog in this fight, not so much because of his ripe age but rather his lack of size and his poor showings in his three prior fights at heavyweight against non-top tier opposition. Mormeck is truly a fighter out of his class in this fight, as he’s really a cruiserweight who’s put on weight try and find success – and big paydays – at heavyweight. Given the absence of big names in the division, Mormeck, ranked #9 WBA, #9 WBO and #12 IBF, is getting a shot way too soon for what he’s accomplished at this level.

Mormeck will be giving away seven inches in reach and seven inches in height against Wladimir on December 10th. If you thought the size disparity between Vitali Klitschko and Tomasz Adamek was bad just wait until you see this fight. Wladimir is going to take a lot of heat for taking such a weak opponent at this stage in his career, and it may hurt his chances of this fight being shown on HBO or Showtime in the U.S. However, with the loot that Wladimir makes in Germany for mismatches like this, I’m sure he’ll not be hurting for money. The German people will no doubt love this fight and fill up the ESPRIT arena on December 10th the same way they did in Wladimir’s fight against Haye last July at the Imtech-Arena, Altona, Hamburg, Germany.
