Mariusz Wach vs. Oliver McCall on November 5th

By Dan Ambrose: Number #9 ranked WBC contender Mariusz Wach (25-0, 13 KO’s) will be defending his WBC International heavyweight title on Novmeber 5th against 46-year-old former World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Oliver McCall (56-11, 37 KO’s) at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

For the 6’8″ 31-year-old Wach, this will be a huge step up from the guys that Wach has been fighting up until now. A lot of fuss was made over Wach recently when he destroyed an out of shape 38-year-old Kevin McBride with a one-punch 4th round knockout last July.

Wach impressed fans with his right hand power, and even has some of them thinking he’s good enough to beat the Klitschkos. However, Wach lacks hand speed, coordination, defense and foot movement. He doesn’t have much in the way of an arsenal other than his right hand. It’s impossible to even consider Wach good enough now or even in the future to beat either of the Klitschkos. The difference in talent between them and Wach is tremendous.

Wach will struggle badly in this fight if McCall has anything left in the tank. The good news for Wach is that McCall has looked terrible in his last four fights against Timur Ibragimov, Fres Oquendo, Cedric Boswell and Damian Willis, losing two of the four fights. McCall has come in heavy in all four fights and isn’t the trim 220 pound heavyweight that he used to be in the 90s when McCall was at the top of his game.

This is a good fight for Wach, because McCall, even now, has about the same talent as Wach. Of course, a younger McCall would destroy Wach, but if McCall has recapture enough of his youth for one night, he should be able to dominate the painfully slow Wach. This is a good match-up for McCall. He should win this if he has anything left in the tank because Wach is very mediocre and hardly deserves to be ranked number #9 by the WBC.
