Image: Kell Brook vs. Rafal Jackiewicz this SaturdayBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA Inter-Continental welterweight champion Kell Brook (24-0, 16 KO’s) will be putting his obscure belt on the line this Saturday night against #5 IBF, #14 WBO ranked contender Rafael Jackiewicz (38-9-1, 19 KO’s) what for Brook is supposed to be a step up fight at the Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK.

Sadly, this is a step up for Brook, a seven-year pro, who has been very, very carefully matched his entire career and brought along slowly to get to this point. Jackiewicz is just another part in the slow move for Brook to get to a title shot without being tripped up by anyone.

He’ll win this fight alright, because Jackiewicz is beatable and doesn’t have a lot of power. However, Brook’s next fight will likely be someone of similar talent as Jackiewicz until Brook eventually gets his title shot. There’s a chance that IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan may use Brook as an opponent for Khan’s first fight as a welterweight. I’ll believe that when I see it.

Brook is ranked #2 by the WBO, but he’s not going to be facing champion Manny Pacquiao anytime soon because Brook lacks the quality fights on his resume to get such a fight. That’s the problem with taking the slow approach. Brook may eventually get a title shot, but you miss out on so many important fights along the way because of the lack of quality on your resume.

In Brook’s last five fights he’s beaten the following guys: Michael Lomax, Krzysztof Bienias, Michael Jennings,Philip Kotey and Lovemore N’dou. Now he’s about to add Jackiewicz’s name to that list. The guys that Brook should have been fighting in his last five fights in my view are Jesus Soto Karass, Mike Jones, Randall Bailey, Shawn Porter and Selcuk Aydin. I see those guys as adequate contenders to get a fighter like Brook ready for a title shot.
