Image: Horta easily beats ByrneBy Scott Gilfoid: As it turns out Frankie Gavin (11-0, 8 KO’s) may have done the wise thing by pulling out of his fight with Frank Horta (27-8-5, 10 KO’s) last Friday night because I think Horta would have beaten him. Horta, 31, looked great in defeating his Irish replacement opponent Dean Byrne (15-1, 6 KO’s) by an 8th round stoppage at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre, in Manchester, England.

The fight was one-sided throughout and eventually halted after the 8th round by Byrne’s corner. It as a smart move because Byrne was just soaking up one-sided punishment from the tall 5’10” Frenchman. The only round I gave Byrne was the 3rd. The other rounds he was getting lancing by the southpaw Horta’s powerful jab from the outside and hit with right and left hooks over and over again.

Byrne showed no power whatsoever, even when in close. That was the only area where Byrne had any success with his shots, but he simply had nothing on them. I know Byrne took the fight on short notice but the power was never there to begin with. He looked like a fighter out of his weight class. Byrne might want to consider moving down to the lightweight division because he doesn’t have the power for welterweight or light welterweight in my opinion.

From the 4th round on, Byrne stopped throwing as much and just took shots from the constantly forward moving Horta. Byrne’s corner probably should have called it a night at that time rather than waiting four more rounds and letting him take needless punishment.
