Dirrell: Froch is my number one priority

Image: Dirrell: Froch is my number one priorityBy Scott Gilfoid: Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO’s) really regrets agreeing to fight WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) in his hometown of Nottingham, England in 2009, because it ended with Froch beating Dirrell by a very, very controversial decision that still bugs Dirrell to this day.

Dirrell now sees Froch as his number one priority and badly wants to get Froch back in the ring – outside of the UK – so that Dirrell can resume schooling Froch like he did in 2009. Dirrell believes Froch isn’t happy with his questionable win and wants to prove to himself and to boxing fans that he’s really better than Dirrell and that he didn’t just receive a gift decision by two of the European judges working the Dirrell-Froch fight two years ago.

Dirrell said this to eastsideboxing.com’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio program: “I would like to get in the ring with Froch. I believe…Froch wants to rematch me as well. That’s a fight that’s going to linger in the back of his head, especially if he wins this tournament. If Froch wins this tournament then he’s definitely going to want to erase the bad little odor that he has floating over him…As far as showing the world what I got and what I should have had, it will be Froch. That’s my number one priority.”

I hear you, Andre. Froch has a tainted win over you and it’s going to be good to show the world that how much better you are than Froch.

I had Dirrell whipping Froch by an 8 rounds to 3 with 1 even score. I gave Froch a couple of mercy rounds where he held and hit and got away with a massive amount of fouling. If you take away the fouling Froch did, I only gave him one round.

Dirrell touched on Froch’s fouling, as well as the fouling by Arthur Abraham in his fight against Dirrell in the eastsideboxing.com article. Dirrell said “I did it so beautiful [dominating Froch and Abraham with his boxing skills]. I got cheated out of both fights. I was roughed up both fights.”

Dirrell is so right. Froch should have been disqualified for the fouling he did against Dirrell in my mind, and yet Froch never received one point deduction. It was so sad the way the referee lost control over the fight and just things get out of hand.

If Froch does ever agree to fight Dirrell again, they need to make sure the fight takes place in the U.S or some neutral country where there won’t be any controversy. We need a strong referee like Jay Nady to work the fight so that any bending of the rules is immediately corrected by the ref. We can’t have a repeat of the Dirrell-Froch fight where Dirrell is getting brained with rabbit punches and/or getting held hit and body slammed on the canvas, all without points being deducted.
