Image: Bellew: I know I won at least 6 rounds against CleverlyBy Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (16-1, 10 KO’s) believes he should have been given the decision in his fight against WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (23-0, 11 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

At the minimum, Bellew feels he should have gotten a 12 round draw out of the fight. I totally agree with Mr. Bellew. I personally scored the fight a draw and no way do I see Cleverly having won that fight.

Speaking with talksport.co.uk, Bellew said “I know I definitely won six rounds of the fight…I know I won six of those rounds clearly. How I can’t have got a decision or how it wasn’t scored a draw, I can’t comprehend the loss because I just don’t think I’ve lost.”

The judges scored the fight 117-112, 114-114 and 116-113. I agree with the 114-114 score. Even when I was going out of my way to score rounds for Cleverly, I still couldn’t see him winning anymore than six rounds in this fight. He was getting hit with some mammoth shots from Bellew and getting hit cleanly. These weren’t glancing blows by any means. Bellew was putting everything he had in these shots and Cleverly was eating them.

You got to feel sorry for Bellew. He did a great job of taking the fight to Cleverly all night long and landed the much bigger shots in the fight. I thought scoring in the fight by the two judges that gave the fight to Cleverly weren’t in line with the action of the fight, in particular the judge that scored it 117-112 for Cleverly. Can you honestly see Cleverly winning by that score? Just sad.

Bellew needs a rematch, but it’s probably not going to happen anytime soon. Cleverly already has wish list of fighting Chad Dawson or Bernard Hopkins, neither of which are even remotely interested in fighting Cleverly. Other than those guys, Cleverly also wants to fight WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov. That’s a little more realistic option but even that fight I can’t see happening. Look for Cleverly to face one of his challengers.
