Image: Zaveck tailor made for Berto to pick up an easy title againstBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KO’s) has the perfect guy to be fighting to pick up an easy paper title on Saturday night in facing IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18 KO’s) at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, Biloxi, Mississippi.

Zaveck is old at 35, very slow with his hands and feet, and not a huge puncher. Berto couldn’t have a better set-up than this to capture a title. And the best part of all, HBO is televising the fight for some reason.

No doubt they’re hoping it’s an exciting affair similar to Berto’s last fight against Victor Ortiz last April where Berto was beaten by a 12 round decision after knocking Ortiz down twice. It’s doubtful the Zaveck fight will be anything close to that, because he doesn’t have the same tools that Ortiz had going for him.

Berto will likely dominate the slower Zaveck with quick combinations and then tie him up in a clinch the way he likes to do. I expect it to be an incredibly boring fight because of the one-sided nature of it, and because of Berto’s tendency to hold after punching so that he can a rest break. Berto has been working on his conditioning with nutritionist Victor Conte, but I doubt Berto will be any better in that department than he’s been. He’s not made to fight hard.

Berto is someone that can only fight at full intensity for brief spurts in every round. If you push him hard to the way that Ortiz did then he wears down and loses. Unfortunately, Zaveck is too slow and limited to push Berto, so we’re going to see a boring mismatch tomorrow night.

I just hope once Berto beats Zaveck that Berto doesn’t go back to milking his title again like he used to while holding down the WBC strap. Berto fought some of the smallest and weakest opponents available every time until he finally faced a good fighter in Ortiz and got beat.
