Image: Why Vitali Klitschko vs. David Haye will happenBy John F. McKenna (McJack): World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) who scored a 10th round TKO over Tomasz Adamek (44-2, 28 KO’s) last Saturday night in Wroclaw, Poland is not yet ready to hang up the gloves.

The 40 year old Klitschko intends to remain active for at least two or three more fights. Vitali has made no secret of his intense dislike for the tactics used by former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) in the lead up to his fight with Vitali’s brother, heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s).

After Wladimir’s one sided victory over Haye in July, Vitali let it be known that he was happy that his brother had won, but that he would like the opportunity to send the “Hayemaker” to the floor. Vitali was not amused by the trash talking, insults and barbs that Haye lambasted the Klischko’s with prior to the fight and felt that he insulted the Klitschko family.

“Dr. Ironfist” has a huge score to settle with Haye and for that reason is willing to overlook the fact that after the humiliating defeat he suffered at the hands of Vladimir, David does not really deserve another championship fight.

Let’s look at some of the reasons I believe such a fight will happen:

First, and this could be the most important reason of all, Vitali wants David Haye in a bad way. Haye has gotten under his skin big time and he really wants to knock him out.

Second, Haye for his part detests both of the Klitschko’s and has been doing his best to publicly humiliate then for over two years.

Third, even though Haye does not really deserve another title shot, a grudge match is a promoters dream and usually pretty easy to sell.

Fourth, Haye’s image after his pitiful performance in July is in tatters. Even the British press lambasted David in the days after the Vladimir fight. At 30 years old, Haye is still a young man and he would have a long time to think about what might have been. More than likely he would like to turn around the public’s perception of him.

Fifth, there is no other fighter in the heavyweight rankings, other than the Klitschko’s who have David Haye’s name recognition. Granted it would take a considerable effort by promoters to rehabilitate his image as a fighter, but it could be done.

In anticipation of a match up between Vitali Klitschko and David Haye there have been a number of comments to the press from both camps. Haye is already back to trash talking calling Vitali old and slow and saying that he will send him into retirement.

As amazing as it may seem to some, it will not take long before many of Haye’s fans climb back on board in the belief that he will defeat Vitali.
