The way that Ortiz lost could hurt him in trying to get rematches against Berto and Mayweather

Image: The way that Ortiz lost could hurt him in trying to get rematches against Berto and MayweatherBy Eric Thomas: Losing the way he did could really badly hurt former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO’s) in his hopes for getting rematches first with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and secondly with Andre Berto. Ortiz appeared looked as if he was melting down mentally at the time decided to headbutt Mayweather for no particular reason, and the drop his hands to his sides after the fight was resumed following a point deduction.

More than a few boxing fans saw it as another quit job for Ortiz. He’d already quit once against Marcos Maidana in 2009, and the way the Mayweather looked, it appears Ortiz was looking for another way out. Now not quite a week after the fight the interest in a rematch between Ortiz and Mayweather isn’t there among hardcore boxing fans. And the casual boxing fans probably aren’t too eager to see Mayweather fight Ortiz again either, knowing that it could be an even worse mismatch the second time around.

Ortiz said after the fight that with or without Mayweather, he’ll be a champion again within six months. It’s not likely that Mayweather fights Ortiz again, meaning Ortiz is going to have to hope that IBF welterweight champion Andre Berto shows interest in fighting him. Right off the bat, I don’t think Berto is going to want to give Ortiz a rematch after that dreadful performance. Ortiz might be able to bring in a lot of the Hispanic boxing fans for a pay per view bout or a fight on regular cable.

However, I wouldn’t bet on it. Ortiz really needs to rebuild by picking up some good wins, preferably against top tier opposition before trying to coax one of the top fighters to give him a shot. I can’t see Ortiz getting a fight against Many Pacquiao after this performance. Ortiz really should look at some of the guys like Marcos Maidana or Mike Jones if he wants to get his name back. He’s probably not going to get a fight against a champion right now. I think he eventually will because he made a name for himself with the attention he received fighting Mayweather.
