Image: Ortiz wants Pacquiao if Mayweather won't give him a rematchBy Chris Williams: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, his manager and promoter Oscar De La Hoya tried to make a case for a rematch between Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather Jr. today in a conference call. If Mayweather won’t give Ortiz a rematch, then he wants to fight WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao next. All I can say about that is don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen. Pacquiao fights for Top Rank Promotions, while Ortiz fights for Golden Boy. Need I say more?

The call didn’t go well, as Ortiz and company at times seemed as if they were begging for a rematch against Mayweather. It came across as groveling and made Ortiz look bad. If there was any chance of Mayweather giving Ortiz a rematch it died with this phone call. If Mayweather listens to it, which he probably did, he was laughing his head off and probably feeling disgust for Ortiz at the same time.

De La Hoya said “If Mayweather has any honor he will give Victor Ortiz a rematch.”

It’s doubtful that will work. You’re not going to shame Mayweather into giving Ortiz a rematch. This was probably the worst way imaginable in trying to get a rematch with Mayweather.

Ortiz said “Floyd is not respected, never will be in my eyes as a pound for pound fighter.”

This was a pretty sad way of getting Mayweather back in the ring. If I was Ortiz, I would cut my losses and just move on without saying another word about Mayweather. He’s not going to fight him again, and Ortiz needs to accept that and move on. The sooner realizes Mayweather won’t be fighting him again the better off he’ll be.
