Ortiz: Mayweather is done

Image: Ortiz: Mayweather is doneBy Chris Williams: WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) thinks he’s going to finish off boxing’s best fighter in Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) on September 17th in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ortiz, 24, said this in a media telephone conference: “He [Mayweather] is done. He was done when he signed to fight fight Victor Ortiz.”

I was liking how Ortiz had turned over a new leaf and had started talking confidently about himself before his fight against former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto last April, but Ortiz’s confidence seems to have gone to his head because he’s sounding out of touch with reality. You know things are getting bad when fighters with little experience start talking about themselves in the third person. Ortiz needs to get his feet back on the ground and realize that he’s the underdog in this fight, and he’s very likely to lose it.

Ortiz needs some alternative plans, like a Plan B, C, D, E and F for when things don’t work out for him on September 17th. When you’re that confident like Ortiz, there’s a danger that he may be coming into the fight thinking he can to Mayweather what he did to Berto by just rushing him and trying to overwhelm him with punches. That was a great plan for Berto, but I’m not so sure it will work against Mayweather. He’ll light Ortiz up and won’t miss with his shots. If Mayweather is connecting with a high accuracy, Ortiz won’t last long out there and will look more than a little silly because of all the bragging he’s done about himself.
